NGO uses SWOT analysis for self-reflection by its functionaries
Often SWOT (Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Treats) analysis used for organisational review and management purposes. However, Jaipur-based NGO – Centre for Unfolding Learning Potentials (CULP) – used the tool for self-reflection and self-improvement tool as a part of its year-end review exercise.

In the exercise held in the CULP's field office in Jhillay village in Tonk district of Rajasthan, 24 functionaries of the NGO working at different levels participated. "I participated in this kind of exercise for the first time to become the subject and object of analysis both. Thinking about my weaknesses and becoming aware of them was initially a bit difficult but after a few minutes of dwelling on it, I could detach myself from subjective existence and became objective in the outlook," said  Pranvendra Bagra who works at the head office of the NGO.

"The objective of the self-analytical SWOT exercise was to find out the specific needs for mitigating the weaknesses of the functionaries by building the capacity of the functionaries and provide consciously planned opportunities to function better. It is believed that a good person and professional can serve the society well," said the resource person for the SWOT analysis, Dr Lalit Kishore.

The process for the exercise consisted of explaining the tool, ten minute reflection and journal writing, relating the observations to habits, style of functioning and needs for capacity building, explained Dr OP Kulhari, Director of Culp.

The NGO has planned to write an action research report on the basis of the qualitative data collected during the SWOT analysis exercise which was appreciated by the participants.
