The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed its DG (Investigation) to probe into an alleged custodial death in Odisha's Purusottampur Police station, and complete the investigation within eight weeks.
Acting on a complaint of human rights activist and managing trustee of Puri-based organization, India Media Centre, Mr. Akhand, NHRC also directed Odisha police to explain as to why the intimation of the death in police custody has not been sent to the Commission within the stipulated period.
One Pramod Sahu (40) of Kamasahi village under Purusottampur Police limit in Ganjam district of Odisha died in police custody in same police station on Jan 16.
The Purusottampur police was interrogating him for last two days in connection with a money-lending dispute. But police said Sahu was being called to the police station for questioning but allowed to go home after interrogation.
The petitioner informed, “Family members alleged that Pramod was severely beaten at Purusottampur police station. So we filled a petition before the commission and prayed for a compensation of Rs. 10 lakhs for the victim’s family and action against guilty police officials.”
