Nike suspends its relationship with Maria Sharapova after she fails in dope test
Five-time Grand Slam tennis champion Maria Sharapova on Monday failed a dope test at the Australian Open. She will be facing a maximum four-year ban under the World Anti-Doping Code.

Sharapova announced that she had tested positive for Meldonium. She said she did not look at the updated ban list before taking the drug.

At a press Conference in Los Angles she said, "It is very important for you to understand that for 10 years this medicine was not on WADA's banned list and I had legally been taking the medicine for the past 10 years....But on January 1st the rules had changed and meldonium became a prohibited substance which I had not known."

According to Forbes magazine she was the top earning sportsmen from endorsements, but after this news Nike has suspended its relationship with the star. In a statement the company said, "We are saddened and surprised by the news about Maria Sharapova. We have decided to suspend our relationship with Maria while the investigation continues. We will continue to monitor the situation."

Meldonium has generally been used by athletes in various sports for its mild stimulant-like properties. It is a relatively safe and non-toxic drug. Athletes have used it in performance-enhancing dosages, but now recently this drug has been brought into the banned list.
