Nirbhaya gang-rape case: SC upholds death sentence of all four convicts
The Supreme Court today upheld the death sentence of all the four accused in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case.

The four convicts are Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh.

All the thee judges of the apex court delivered the verdict on Friday while upholding that the case fell in the category of rarest of rare cases.

A trial court had held all the four accused (except the juvenile) in 2013 guilty for the crime. The verdict was later upheld by the Delhi High Court. In March 2013, Ram Singh, another accused in the case was found hanging inside the Tihar Jail.

There were in total six people involved in the rape and murder of Nirbhaya on the unfortunate night of December 16, 2012. Out of the six ,one of the culprits was Ram Singh, who committed suicide in Tihar Jail. While one of the accused had been tried under juvenile law and sent for three years in a reformatory home.

The four culprits who have have been given death sentence were tried for offences under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 376 (2)(g) (gangrape), 377 (unnatural offences), 395 (dacoity), 396 (murder in dacoity), 201 (destruction of evidence), 120-B (conspiracy), 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), 365 ( kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), and 412 (dishonestly receiving property stolen in the commission of a dacoity) of the IPC.

The rape of 23-year-old physiotherapy student on December 16, 2012 in a moving bus by six people had sent shock waves across the nation, given the brutality shown to the girl. The criminals not only did unimaginable things to the girl but they were also brutal with the male friend of the girl who was with her.

Raped and dumped to die on 16 December 2012, this incident, which is now infamous as 'the Delhi gang rape,' pointed towards how unsafe the national capital had become for women.  The incident made people talk about a taboo topic and protest against violence, abuse and domination of the male counterparts over the fairer sex.
