Nirbhaya gang rape: Delhi High Court upholds death penalty of four convicts
Delhi High Court has upheld the death sentence given to the four convicts in 16 December's Nirbhaya gang rape case. A division bench of Justice Khetrapal and Justice Pratibha Rani while dismissing the defence counsel's plea confirmed the death penalty of the convicts said that the offence committed by them falls in the category of rarest of the rare.

A year before on September 13, a Delhi court had sentenced these four convicts namely Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh, to death on eleven counts i.e. gang-rape, murder, loot, unnatural offences and destruction of evidence.

Victim's parents were also present in the court at the time the verdict was announced. They said that full justice will only come when these convicts will be hanged.

"We have got full faith in the judiciary. We had expected this verdict. But the ultimate satisfaction will be when the convicts meet to their ultimate fate," said the mother of the 23-year-old paramedic while speaking to media.

Defence cousel AP Singh while talking to media after the Delhi Hogh Court's verdict said that the decision is politically motivated.

“When the lower court gave its orders last year, the Delhi Assembly elections were due; and now the Lok Sabha elections are there,” said AP Singh.

On 16 December 2012, the 23-year old student was sexually assaulted in vicious manner by six people including a minor, in a moving white line bus. The men not only robbed the victim and her male friend but also beaten them brutally and then threw them out on the road from the bus.

The minor had been sent to a reform home for three years, while one of the major accused ended his life in Tihar jail during the trial.
