Nirbhaya still exists in Delhi!
The December 16 Delhi gang rape case has left an ineradicable mark in the minds of us, particularly the citizens of the Delhi in concern to the safety and security of women in the city. The cruelty of the incident quantifies to the uncivilised and male dominating mentality of the supposed modern India of 21st century.

The horrifying incident of Dec 16 gang rape led to prevalent anguish and protest across the nation. As a result number of steps were taken by the Delhi Police and government. One of which was the setting up of help lines and women help desks at police stations, Parliament enacting the anti-rape law and many more.

A big question that arises after this, “Has there been any significant change in the attitude of society towards women? Has there any change in the security status of women in Delhi?”

If we look at the figures given by the Delhi Police and National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), we find that all discussion of women safety and any meaningful change in the society’s attitude towards women is just an illusion.

As per the NCRB, a total of 706 rape cases were registered in 2012, while the numbers of registered rape cases were 572 in 2011 as against 507 rape cases reported in 2010. But the Delhi Police has now come with a simple answer. It says these figures are not disturbing and the rise in rape cases in the capital is because more and more cases are being reported and registered!
