Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has blamed former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav for the non-completion of rail projects in his state. He raised the issue of four stalled projects at Patna, Munger, Nirmali and Harnaut.
A WEEK before newly-appointed Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee presents the railway budget, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has urged her to take notice of the tall claims made by her predecessor, Lalu Prasad Yadav, of turning the railways into a profit-making entity. Although, Kumar did not ask her to order an investigation, he sought to know the logic behind Lalu’s claim of engineering the railway’s turnaround during his tenure.
“He claimed that that he had made the railways a profitable entity but, it must be taken into account by Banerjee how it was done,” said Nitish to reporters on Monday. The chief minister was particularly annoyed with the state of railway projects in the state of Bihar which had been comissioned by Lalu, but which were now stuck. He raised the issue of four stalled projects including railway over bridges (ROB) at Patna, Munger and Nirmali and a railway coach factory at Harnaut and blamed Lalu for their non-completion.
Taking a dig at him, Nitish also made a scathing attack on Lalu saying that during his regime at the rail ministry, plans were formulated to slash railway fares but it was also set off by other means. He, however, entreated Banerjee not to do away with the projects which were started by Lalu. Nitish also expected that the upcoming budget would be people-friendly.
