No clear favourites in Maharashtra elections
The upcoming Maharastra assembly elections are creating an atmosphere of suspense over who would win in the state. While some swear by the Congress- NCP combine getting a third term in office, others look towards the BJP-Sena combine or even MNS.

MAHARASHTRA IS getting set for the upcoming assembly elections. After a long time, it is becoming difficult to predict the election results? One cannot fathom who is going to win the battle, who is going to lose it and who, in spite of losing it, is going to be benefited from it.

The general consensus claims that the Congress-NCP coalition will come to power for the third consecutive time. Talking about the ruling alliance, it is necessary to take into consideration that there hasn't been much of development in Maharashtra during the last 10 years. They had their chance to do good work and came back to power without wasting much time on campaigns.

However, the alarming rate of farmers' suicides and shortage of power and water are still haunting the state. Mumbai, the economic capital of the country, an integral part of the state was targeted by terrorists, but the state government seemed helpless. Why? Is it something that can never be worked upon?

Providing packages is not the solution and politicians need to understand this. The actual setting up of adequate support infrastructure is not that difficult. However, our legislators think that making policies is more than enough for all.

Let's turn to the other side of the coin; the opposition. Basically, any opposition in any government has a very responsible and in many cases a positive role to play in the development of a state. But, the only thing that the opposition has successfully done is blaming the ruling party, taking out Morchas, and rallies that don't help the people at all. And now, at the pre-election time, the BJP-Sena alliance is doing only this.

To add to all the chaos, the newly formed Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has shown its powerful presence in the General Elections in May 2009. After having realised the response the youth is giving to the MNS, BJP-Sena is trying to figure out ways of damage control. It has now targeted the MNS and its chief Raj Thackeray, going to the age-old philosophy of criticising one's competition in order to garner votes.

In short,  the major players in these elections have more flaws and hardly any plus points. As a citizen, a voter, I would rather think that whatever damage was to be done has already been done. What harm is it going to cause if this time someone else is given the opportunity to rule for next five years? Why not Raj Thackeray and his MNS? Its time for the public to make a decision now!
