THE THREE member committee to select the next Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of India comprising Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Opposition leader L K Advani and Law minister Veerappa Moily met "informally" on Friday at the PM's residence. They committe held a discussion regarding the appointment of Chief Information Commissioner but no consensus could be reached as per reports.
The meeting, took place almost a month after incumbent CIC Wajahat Habibullah resigned. It was highly anticipated was by RTI activists, who are demanding transparency in the selection process and pressing for the appointment of a non-bureaucrat to the post.
Though speculation is rife that this post could go to people like Madhavana Nambiar, M Ansari, A N Tiwari, Gita Verma and Shekhar Singh.
Shanatanu, Consul Secretary to the government said the selection process will now be taken up only after the Prime Minister returns from the United States. The present incumbent Wahajat Habibullah who is in Srinagar at present, is expected to continue on till a final decision emerges.
