Following a petition filed by a Delhi-based NGO for children's welfare, Uday Foundation, which sought ban on selling of junk food and aerated drinks in and 500kms around the school premises, High Court has issued notices to various govt departments.
THE GROWING trend of selling aerated drinks as well as junk food inside the school premises has caught Delhi High Court’s eye. Following a petition filed by a Delhi-based NGO for children's welfare, Uday Foundation, which sought ban on selling of junk food and aerated drinks in and 500 metres around the school premises, the High Court has issued notices to various government departments.
It is a fast catching trend that such items are being sold to children of all ages in the school and the school authorities most of the times don’t keep a check on what the kids are eating. To point this out Uday Foundation approached the court to direct the government to develop a comprehensive school canteen policy that emphasises healthy nutrition among school children.
Notices have been issued to National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), Delhi government, the human resources development ministry, the ministry of health and family welfare and the directorate of education, Delhi.
It is interesting here to recall that in 2006, the then Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss had suggested the banning of junk food and colas in school canteens and nearby school premises across the country. However, it was never brought to action as the sale of such items continued in and around schools.
