No women is safe in West Bengal: CPM
A string of horrific gang rape cases and sexual assaults have taken place in the recent past in West Bengal. The state has witnessed around 3-4 cases in the recent past, which has shattered people's faith. Once the state was known as the cultured and safest for women, but everything has changed now.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, Bengal has topped the chart in crime against women since 2004, and is second in the list of highest rape cases in India.

In February 2012 Park Street gang-rape case came into light. Recently a 16-year-old girl was gang-raped twice in Madhyamgram, and to hide the incident from getting hype the police even tried to cremate victim's body.

And now a girl has been gang raped in Birbhum district where a khap like panchayat allgedly orderd the gang rape after the victim failed to pay some fine.

Mohammad Salim, the spokesperson of CPI(M), blames the present government of West Bengal for its in-action and also for encouraging the rapists and criminals who have been involved in such cases by not taking strict action against them.

Salim said, “Till now their is no regret on the government's part and the police administration. The government from very beginning is in a denial mode and is claiming the opposition and the media for highlighting such stories.”

Commenting on the opposition's accusations against the TMC-led Government, Savitri Mitra, the minister of Social Welfare Department said that CPM is unnecessarily blaming the Trinamool government, “Mamata ji is taking every measure to curb the rape cases happening in West Bengal, she has ordered the police to arrest the culprits as early as possible and to take immediate action against them.”

CPM's spokesperson further said, "Mamata banerjee has always blamed left, saying that the opposition is cooking such stories. And when the police administration is getting such messages from the top level, in-spite of stopping such cases and taking strong action against the culprit, the Chief Minister is saying that all these things are bogus and cocktail stories. So, the criminals are becoming more embolden."

CPM feels that Government is focusing more on hiding the issue rather than punishing the criminals. And when such incidents come up, they are now threatening the victims and are booking them under some fake cases.

“We can see a series of gang rapes coming up in West Bengal and No women in West Bengal is safe. Their is a big jump in the number of cases in crime against women and it is the societal attitude and the political atmosphere which is encouraging such incidents,” said Salim.
