Noted sports commentator Jasdev Singh passes away
Noted Indian sports commentator Jasdev Singh passed away on 25 September at the age of 84, informed my Facebook friend, who had been the fan of his voice during the radio era.

Singh has started his career as a commentator from AIR, Jaipur.  My friend wrote that for his generation of sports lovers, Jasdev Singh's familiar animated voice was a treat to listen to due to the fact that the way he put emotions in his voice was unmatched.

From AIR, he later switched over to DD to become the official commentator on Independence Day as well as the Republic Day parade broadcasts.

People loved the tone and tenor of his commentary during hockey matches. Over the years, he had covered nine Olympics, eight hockey World Cups and six Asian Games and through his voice he could make people emote with goals scored or missed in a hockey matches.

After having impressed and moved by Melville d'Mello's commentary on Mahatma Gandhi's funeral and started training his voice to evoke a range of emotions during sporting events and almost perfected them.

Because of his lucid way of commentary with a balanced mix of Hindi and Urdu, his commentary of matches was equally popular in Pakistan too.

He was honoured with Padma Shri in 1985 and Padma Bhushan in 2008 by the GOI. Internationally, he made a mark by winning the Olympic Order Award given by Juan Antonio Samaranch, then IOC president.
