BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi was re-appointed as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee on Sunday after BJP renominated him for the post. Joshi's PAC report on 2G scam was rejected by the PAC.
NOTWITHSTANDING THE controversy surrounding his report on the 2G scam, BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi was on Sunday reappointed as the chairman of the Public Account Committe (PAC) for another year. This means Joshi will stay at the post despite the government refusing to accept his contention that majority did not matter, while finalising the reports of the PAC.
Joshi in his report had attacked the Prime Minister, the Home Minister as well as the PMO for their alleged complicity in the 2G scam. He was nominated by the BJP again and as such was reappointed by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to be the chairman of the PAC.
The PAC report authored by Joshi had evoked sharp criticism from the Congress and DMK as it categorically laid blame for the 2G scam at the doors of the PM Manmohan Singh. Consequently, the PAC report was rejected by the 11 members of the PAC committee, which comprises of 21 members. Terming this rejection as unconstitutional, Joshi said that this was against the spirit of parliamentary democracy. Meanwhile, the government reacting on the recent developments in the PAC, rejected the view expressed by Joshi that numbers were not important and he did not have to go by majority. It also said that voting is inherent to democratic functioning of various institutions.
HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said that the report submitted by Joshi-led committee was only a draft and could not be deemed as a report as it was not adopted by the committee.
