The article is about the keen watch of adminstration in Kashmir on Facebook as the website is being used to instigate violence and anti-India protests.
FACEBOOK, THE commonly used social networking site is being strictly watched in Kashmir by the authorities as through this networking site it is being apprehended that lot of instigation of violence is reported and many pro-freedom videos and photos are being uploaded on it to provoke violence among other users of Facebook in Kashmir.
There was a time when an era of guns in Kashmir emerged during the early 90’s. Being in action in almost two decades it started to fade away as the era of stone pelting started to surface. Government also claimed that this era of stone pelting was much more difficult to handle then the era of guns. People of Kashmir came on the streets to protest against the government and the security forces. Many lives were lost during the unrest. During these three years a name was heard everywhere “face book”. Then it was not that popular but now it has replaced stones in Kashmir. Face book has made a new way to protest in Kashmir and these protest are called e-protests.
E-protests in present age have become so popular that everybody in Kashmir is directly or indirectly linked to it and the most number of e-protests are witnessed on face book. Hundreds of pages on Facebook are being made by Kashmiris and non-Kashmiris against India and in favor of pro-freedom leaders. The pages like, “free kashmir”,”go India go back”,”curfewistan”,”total freedom” etc are some of the popular pages seen on Facebook. Frequent updates are often seen on Facebook and the latest news during strikes and curfews are also uploaded on Facebook. Apparently an administrator of a Facebook page against India “kale kharaab” (bull headed) was taken into custody by Srinagar police on charges of uploading pro freedom slogans, videos and photos on his page on Facebook. Before this many others were arrested on the same charges in Kashmir during the unrest. Facebook has now become a common way to protest as it offers fewer chances of arrest or identification. Surprisingly, the Facebook using girls of the valley are also part of these e-protests and often upload anti-Indian material on the site. The news of clashes or killings in Kashmir is first uploaded on Facebook and then the news channels telecast it.“We want our voice to be heard all over the world and Facebook is the most preferred way because it is almost used by everyone all around the world”, a Facebook user says after not disclosing his name. The administration is lso very much serious about e-protests and is keeping a keen watch on Facebook users of Kashmir.
