Now Gmail to allow phone calls from computers
The officials at Google said that making calls through this service as simple as a normal phone. For making a call, the user will have to click on the 'call' option after selecting the person from their friend list.
GOOGLE ON Wednesday said that Gmail users will now be allowed to make calls to home phones and mobile phones directly. Inhabitants of US and Canada will be entitled to make free calls for the rest of the year throughout their respective countries whereas they will be charged low rates for making overseas calls across selected countries, Google said.

The company gave an estimate by saying that calls to Britain, France, Japan, Germany and China would cost as low as 2 cents. Observers of such kind of services say that this move from Google could pose greater threat for companies like Skype and other traditional telecom companies as they have already been slashing their call rates.

This move from Google would undoubtedly make it ubiquitous across various platforms, in which digital telephony is the new entrant. The services offered by them already includes e-mail, social networking, text messages and video chats.

Since Gmail's voice and video chat has been in existence for over two years, it required both the parties to be in front of their computers. The new service introduced will enable people stuck at a particular area with a poor mobile reception to make quick calls from their workstations.

Calls that will cost the user, will be charged from an online account for which the users will have to top up using their credit card. The company further added that the service is not applicable for making outgoing calls on mobile phones as some of the Google applications already carry that service.
