NRHM scam gets murkier: One more person shot himself to death
The multi-crore NRHM scam in Uttar Pradesh is getting murkier with each passing day. As the CBI takes its probe ahead in the irregularities that were committed by the officials in implementing the schemes, one more person shot himself to dead today morning.

THE NATIONAL Rural Health Mission (NRHM) programmes in the state of Uttar Pradesh have already made big headlines for wrong reasons. The scam which runs into millions of rupees is supposed to be one of the biggest scams that have hit the state in recent times. Only after the murder of three medical officers in Lucknow in a short span of time and with the involvement of two cabinet ministers in the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Mayawati government, the case was finally referred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further probe.

The CBI which took the case in its hand has now summoned some 18 senior government officials and contractors of Uttar Pradesh to Delhi for further investigation into the scam. The agency has already registered some eight FIRs in the case and it is expected that the sleuths would make a few more arrests in the multi-crore scam.

The senior officials who have been summoned by the CBI to its Delhi office include the names like Pradeep Shukla (IAS), PACFED Managing Director V.K. Choudhary, former CMD of UPPCL, Devendra Mohan, the convenor Nehru Yuva Kendra, D.K. Singh who is absconding along with his family members, and former MLA and BSP leader Ashok Bajpai.

The CAG team probing the NRHM scam in Uttar Pradesh has already found anomalies in the spending of amount which is estimated at around Rs 5,000 crore under different schemes of the NRHM, which were carried out in about two-dozen districts of the state.

The other interesting find was  a big amount of money that was transferred through non registered society, and contracts worth Rs 1,170 crore were given against the ‘open tendering process,’ which was also against the established rules of the procedure fixed by the government.

However, another official Sunil Verma whose name was found involved in the scam, shot himself dead here in Lucknow on Monday morning. He became the fourth person to commit suicide or get murdered, as many people believe so, because of his proximity to Babu Lal Kushwaha, the minister whose name has also been figured in the name of suspects.

Verma was named in the first FIR filed in the scam relating to upgradation of 134 hospitals across Uttar Pradesh for an amount of Rs.13.4 crores by the Construction and Design Services, a unit of Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam in which former state minister Babu Singh Kushwaha also figured.
