NRM-RADIO speaks for itself
A seminar organised by SIMC on the radio scenario in India

RADIO SPEAKS: Sumana Chowdhury National Radio Meet the brain child of Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication saw its second year on 19th September, 2009. The event regarding the radio world which successfully took off in August last year began its second innings under the pg batch of 2010 of SIMC. This year the event has doubled in content and quality with two days i.e. 19th and 20th September, 2009. National Radio Meet popularly known as NRM amongst the students catered to speakers from different radio stations, from All India Radio to FM channels to even internet radio stations.

This year it also saw a speaker all the way from Bangladesh talking about Bangladesh Broadcasting (BB).The event was organized at the SIMC auditorium at Lavale campus in the presence of the students of Batch 2010 and 2011. The auditorium was decorated with different standees, posters and other creative?s designed by the students themselves. The event was inaugurated with a prayer and by lighting of the ?Dia? by the Director of SIMC, Mr. Ujjwal Kumar Chowdhury and the esteemed panel of speakers consisting of Mr.Sharmon Ibrahim and Ms. Jina Campos Braganza of My Opus Radio, Mr. Vehrnon Ibrahim, VP Programming, Radio One and Mr. B.Surendar, Sr. VP & National; Sales Head, Red FM.NRM was officially declared open by Mr. Ujjwal Kumar Chowdhury. He began with the words, ?Last year was the worst financial year in the last decade. The GDP growth rate was 5.8%, for media it was 12% but for Radio it was 15%. By this we can imagine the power, reach and popularity of radio as a medium?. These words of his was an appropriate introduction for the event and set the mood going which was further enhanced by the upcoming speakers. The first guest speaker in fact speakers for the event were Mr. Sharmon Ibrahim and Ms. Jina Campos Braganza of My Opus Radio.

They started by introducing My Opus Radio, which is a Bangalore based and a recently launched internet radio channel, the possibilities and future of Internet as an apt option for radio transmission. They further spoke about the 8 different channels under My Opus Radio which were later launched in February 2009 and gave a break up of their listenership statistics according to countries and cities (India). They added the various limitations especially regarding the government regulations of provision of Royalty and also about the different revenue models which have helped them to stand.The next speaker for the day was Mr. Vehrnon Ibrahim, VP Programming, Radio One. His talk was essentially concentrated to the emerging face of Radio.. He began with the drawing out of a comparison between Radio as a industry and Fishery. He quoted, ?We create and generate LISTENERSHIP and all the other reasons like content creation, entertainment, Information are all subsidiaries to it?. He stressed on the idea that they sell their listeners to their advertisers to generate revenue.

He also spoke about radio contests and games, about FCT?s (Fixed Commercial Time)The third speaker for the first session was Mr. B.Surendar, Sr. VP & National; Sales Head, Red FM. He gave a more detailed overview of the revenue model and the possibilities of Radio Industry today. He talked about geographical and genre expansion in radio, non FCT revenue model, the economy of radio etc. His session was pretty engrossing and the students tried to absorb every bit of the new found knowledge on this front. The session was followed by an interactive session with students moderated by the director himself. Students clarified their doubts and put forth questions which they wanted to know more about. The end of the first session saw its high with film maker Mahesh Manjrekar walking the stage who had visited the campus for a location recci for his new film. The post lunch session was also equally engaging with speakers like Mr. S.M. Shafiul Islam, University of Development Alternative, Dhaka, Bangladesh, Mr. Ashmat Mulla, Founder, Radio FTII, Mr. Mukesh Sharma, Director, AIR. The first speaker for the post lunch session which concentrated on the growth potential of Social and Development Communication using radio as an instrument for change was Mr. S.M. Shafiul Islam, University of Development Alternative, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He basically spoke on the radio scenario in Bangladesh and the important role that radio has played in combating social issues and natural disaster. He held radio as a medium which is cheap and best for developing nations.Mr. Ashmat Mulla, Founder, Radio FTII was the second speaker for the session.

He talked predominantly about the community radio in India, its objectives uses, benefits. According to him community radio has emerged as a powerful medium of communication for the poor. He also added that the content creation is by the people, of the people and for the people of a particular community. There are various reasons why different colleges, corporate houses and communities come together to form community radio. His speech gave the students an overall but detailed view on community radio.The last speaker for the day was Mr. Mukesh Sharma, Director, AIR. He had a very interesting presentation which consisted of the history of radio in India. It was elaborate yet interesting. He focused on the golden era of All India Radio, programs like Binaca Geet Mala and presenters like Hamid Sayani and Ameen Sayani. He also raised important question about competition between AIR and FM channels, telecasting of news on FM channels. He was of the view that FM channels should be permitted to telecast news and live events and let the people decide which one is more concrete and trust worthy.Thus ended the first day of NRM with the students get an opportunity to listen to the stalwarts of the Radio Industry in India today. These speakers gave various insights to the students who are interested in taking up radio as a career or wanted to understand the revenue model of a radio channel. The second day is still set to roll but the magic has been created already, with the students looking forwards to the second day of NRM season 2 on 20th of September, 2009.
