WE DO what we want to do even if the highest court in the land says otherwise. This is what happened in some of the schools in Delhi during nursery admissions. There should not be any test for the students nor should parents and children be interviewed by the schools. This is what Supreme Court ordered in an attempt to streamline nursery admissions in the capital city. But some did what they wanted to do. We all know how weather was in Delhi in January…but the children along with their parents were running from one school to school for interaction or tests or interview.
Nomenclature of this exercise was different in different schools but the idea was same- making the cold weather more miserable for parents and children.
I was also one of those parents and my daughter was also among thousands of those kids who had to get out of the bed and get ready to give their best shot in the interview. When most of the students were enjoying extended winter holidays in wake of extreme cold weather, these little kids were ready with their pencil box to appear for the entrance.
First entrance examination of four year old child
The most shocking was an hour entrance examination. The maximum duration for attempting any test for the adults is three hours. Is the difference of two hours is justified for the age difference of 15 years. When my daughter was invited by one of the schools for the first entrance examination of her life, I was worried only about the fact that how she was going to spend an hour there. I am sure the concern was the same with most of the parents.
While children were busy doing what either they know, or school authorities know, parents were freezing outside, waiting for their little ones to come wondering what they would be doing. Any ways children started coming out after 40 minutes some smiling, some laughing and some poor ones came out with tears. Parents were hoarded outside the gate to have glimpse of their child so that they can reach them. I could understand the anguish of those parents whose children did not came after 50 minutes, because I was one of them. The only thing which was making me happy was- yes my child can sit at one place for an hour. When other parents were greeting their children and asking them what they did, some of us were actually elongating our necks to have glimpse of our child. Finally those extra brilliant minds also started appearing on the gate. My daughter was one of them. The moment I saw her I asked her ‘what happened?’ and with a broad smile on her face she said, maza aaya (I enjoyed). This was the case when she appeared for the examination.
Interview with parents: What an experience
In some entrance examination, we the parents were called for interaction. Since we were not told that the children will not be required, so in most of the interactions we had to take them along with us. It was January 12, my daughter was ready with her pencil box for another entrance examination. The queue was long. We asked about our turn and sat there. There children were not supposed to be interviewed only parents were called for interaction. So I asked my little ones to play and I sat there imagining the questions they would ask and finding the appropriate answers for those questions. The line though was very long but was moving fast.
After an hour I was almost near where the entire event was taking pace. All the parents had some sort of tension on their face. Obviously they might not have visualised the questions and also the answers as I did. Now I was quite near to principal’s office and could see the parents going inside and coming outside. To my surprise the expression was the same. Because they were not given time to even change a bit of their expression. How many and much of expressions can be changed in five seconds. Five seconds for one parents what they can achieve from this….Any way my turn came and I felt since I had imagined many questions and my answers are ready. So I thought whatever question they will pose I will take at least one or two minutes after all I have waited for more than an hour for this moment… I went inside and the question came, “Is this your form?” I said, “Yes” and the next words were “Ok thank you”…Interview was over. I was not given a chance to speak. The same was with the case of many parents. Those who took extra time I am sure would have said no to the first question- Is this your form? Because now I feel that could have been the only possible way to hang on there for more than five seconds. They call it interview with parents, but I think we were called just to verify the photographs which we had pasted on the form was ours and also to show the power these schools and teachers have. These are two cases, we applied in around fifteen schools.
So, the January and February were quite eventful months for us. I am sorry I can’t mention the names of the schools because the results are yet to be declared and we are still hopeful.
