Nursing is a profession of high dignity and esteem. The traditional loud call ‘Nurse’ by superiors in the work place has undergone a noticeable transformation. Now the voices have been lowered tremendously! It’s a call with a reverence these days. Doctors and administrators look up to them for advice. The nursing uniform is shining. Nursing profession is somewhat managerial a task now. Patients and their relatives wait for them with patience. The notion that a nurse is just a technical assistant to doctors has vanished. They are rather technical experts now. Nurses these days assume the roles of Nurse Managers, Nursing Consultants, Care Managers, Administrators, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Midwife Managers etc. Societies across the world have recognized Nursing as a critical and highly essential profession. Matrimonial forecasts for nurses are now in line with highly qualified professionals such as doctors, chartered accountants, lecturers, hoteliers, and technologists.

Most of the universities across the world have established higher education and research centres for nurses. The Nursing science teaching and learning facilities are now at par with those of Medical Science and Business schools. All India Institute of Medical Sciences [India], Royal College of Nursing [UK], National Institute of Nursing Research [NINR, USA], Research College of Nursing, USA, Curtin University Nursing Research Centre [Australia] are a few of them.
Indian nurses are enjoying the top most position in the Global Job Market. This high ranking is likely to continue for many decades to come because of so many factors. Alarming increase in the number and form of health care facilities across the globe is one of the main contributing factors. Technological innovations in the fields of Medical Research, Diagnostic Science, Health Care Administration, Patient Management, and Allied Health Sciences are demanding more and more qualified and technically savvy nurses to join the league. Hospitals and Nursing Homes in India, USA, UK, Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are desperately in need of big numbers of qualified nurses and nurse managers.

The quality facilities require diminishing nurse-service user ratios, whilst there is a shortage of skilled nurses that can’t be met even through international recruitments. Most of the developed countries face acute shortages of qualified nurses as their young generations are averse to taking up this risky assignment. Increasing ageing population is another factor contributing to this crisis. The average life expectancy is at an alarming high in these countries when compared to the nursing force available. Increase in senile morbidity and mushrooming of care facilities pave the way for an ever time high influx of third world care professionals to these nations. Recent market surveys report an inspiring demand of care staff in the above said locations of the world. USA requires 8 lakh nurses by the year 2010, while UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand require almost an equal number put together. Indian nurses are always on high demand in all these countries. They are famous for their commitment to job, dedication, persistence, healthy body and mind and an admirable loyalty to their paymasters. Western patients eventually realize that there is a beautiful & fair heart throbbing inside their dusky skin!

Nursing is a recession free profession. The Gulf mania has not been affected by the recent pro-Western/US trends among migrating nurses. There are many Middle East health care facilities offering huge pay packages to nurses at par with that of US, UK, Australia, etc and even more! Many hospitals in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and UAE offer more than INR 1,00,000.00 per month in addition to other attractive perks and facilities. In effect the recent global recession has only resulted in increased demand for them as recession has its adverse reflections on the general health of individuals.

Though there is an unprecedented increase in the demand for qualified nurses across the developed world, Asian and African nations alone cannot supply these huge numbers. This is mainly because of the quality shortage in terms of technical knowledge and communication skills. Indian Nursing schools and colleges are well aware of these requirements and are trying their best to prepare their students to meet these international standards. They must initiate in depth research into these additional requirements and augment their students’ skills to increase their international employability. Since communication skills play a crucial role in making a nurse successful across job interview tables and Nursing Council Registration formalities, preparation classes for the students may be started much in advance during their Nursing education. Since international English tests like IELTS and TOEFL examine the candidates’ language skills from a native English perspective, long term preparation is crucial to success.

So, it’s the apt time to take a decision. Everyone can’t become a successful nurse. You need to work hard to hone your nursing skills. You have to be honest, straight forward, humble, caring, lovable, dependable, emotionally supportive, socially outgoing, possess an ability to listen carefully, gentle in behaviour and demeanor, passionate, physically and mentally healthy, and learning new skills throughout your career. Do you have these in you?

Dr. Harish Nair's article on Nursing Career is a truly sensible exposition of the profession's essential traits and qualities. Many grils and boys decide to get into this profession without knowing the actual personal and professionals qualities that make a successful nurse. Being an Indian nurse working in the United Kingdom as the General Manager of a Health care group, I understand the true factors that make a nurse successful in her career. Many students simply dream of an internatioanl career nursing and join nursing schools only with this dream. They enver make an introspection about their own talents and passion for the career they are going to choose. Many of such people do not become successful in Nursing Career.
