Legally the ground has been cleared for the project as a New York agency has already given a go to the proposed mosque project which is to be built near 'Ground Zero'. The project includes a mosque and a community center.
The controversial NY mosque project got a new supporter and a big one indeed. President Obama himself backed the project to build a proposed mosque and Muslim cultural center near the site of the 9/11 attacks or the ground zero in New York. This project has been opposed by US conservatives and many New Yorkers.
Obama said, "As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country," as he was speaking at an event attended by diplomats from Islamic countries and members of the U.S. Muslim community.
"That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances," he added. This issue has heated up and took a form of national debate on whether or not a Muslim community center should be built near a site which was attacked by certain Muslim terrorists.

The memories of the two planes crashing into the Twin Towers are still vivid in minds of Americans which was an al Qaeda attack that took about 2,750 lives. The attacks sent many Americans in trauma and prompted Bush administration to declare a ‘war on terror’ and US invasion of Afghanistan. The families of the victims have launched a strong protest and said that this was a betrayal to the memory of the victims. They also said that it was provocative step by the Muslims who want to raise the Mosque at a site so close to the ground Zero.
