US president Mr. Obama who once denounced the Iraq war as a ‘dumb war’, today marked the formal conclusion of the combat mission in Iraq. He was delivering a speech in Atlanta.
Obama was addressing a convention of Disabled American Veterans in Atlanta on Monday where he reminded himself and others that while as candidate of president of America he pledged to bring the war in Iraq to a responsible end. He further added, “Shortly after taking office, I announced our new strategy for Iraq and for a transition to full Iraqi responsibility. And I made it clear that by August 31, 2010, America’s combat mission in Iraq would end. And that is exactly what we are doing — as promised and on schedule.”Mr. Obama has been in some dispute over his expensive domestic policies in his two year tenure in the office. At the same time his military has worked towards achieving his goal of gradually pulling out of Iraq.
As per the official records go the number of American troops in Iraq at present is just 50,000 which was 144,000 at the start of the eight year old war. These 50,000 soldiers have the task to train the Iraqi security forces and protect the American personnel and facilities. These 50,000 will leave the Iraqi soil by the end of 2011.Mr. Obama’s address to the veterans group is the first of many similar events in coming weeks. These talks are focussed to draw attention to the transition in Iraq.
