THE SPEECH of US President Barack Obama in Indian Parliament was almost a one-sided one favouring India in all aspects, thus pleasing hearts of every Indian including even Parliamentarians from left parties traditionally in opposition to US.
However, his speech also imposed responsibility on India for a lead role in global matters concerning democratic and human rights when Obama reminded India to support human rights and democracy in Myanmar. It is time that India aspiring of a permanent seat at UN Security Council, should develop quality of leadership by taking unbiased view-points where human rights and democratic values are concerned. But before this, it needs to make its own democracy qualitative and honest too which is presently just quantitative and notorious for money-minting scams and scandals involving even political rulers.
It is important that India understands the global dynamics of international politics and designs its policies and practices in conformation of its status as a rising power in the world arena. Securing the support of United States of America for a permanent seat in UNSC is easy but to be able to make this happen in reality is another. There are a number of countries, who do not want India to secure a position in the security council and this must be kept in mind by the policy framers.
