INDIAN CRICKET selectors on Thursday (August 7) announced the One-Day International (ODI) teams for the forthcoming five-match series against Sri Lanka starting on August 18 and the 2008 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan between September 11-28. ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni returned to the team after he opted out of the three-Test series in Sri Lanka.

Yuvraj Singh and Irfan Pathan, who had not been selected in the Test series against Sri Lanka, have been recalled. Pragyan Ojha and Praveen Kumar, who impressed all with their excellent bowling in the Asia Cup, have also found a place in both squads.

Little Master Sachin Tendulkar, medium pacer Zaheer Khan and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh have made a comeback into ODI team after a long break. Tendulkar missed the tri-series in Bangladesh and the Asia Cup in Pakistan due to his groin injury. Zaheer Khan, who last played in a one day international against Pakistan in November last year, was suffering from injuries.

Zaheer made a comeback in the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 championship in April, but wished to keep himself out of the team for Bangladesh series and Asia Cup. Harbhajan was out of the team because of 13-match ban imposed on him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) following slap spat with Sreesanth during an IPL match.

IPL Championship top performers, Yusuf Pathan and Piyush Chawla failed to make it in both the squads. The selectors have also not picked up pacer Ishant Sharma for the ODI series in Sri Lanka, but he has been included in the 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy. Medium pacer Munaf Patel is also named for the ODI series in Sri Lanka, but he has to make way for Ishant in the Champions Trophy. As per speculations, experienced duo Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly, once again have been kept out of the ODI team. Both these batsmen failed to impress in two matches of the ongoing Test series in Sri Lanka.

However, under-19 World Cup winning captain Virat Kohli is the surprise inclusion in both the ODI squads. 19-year-old Kohli has been given the chance due to his consistent performance in the domestic cricket. The Delhi batsman was also the top performers from for India in the Emerging Players Tournament held in Australia last month. Kohli scored 204 runs in the tournament at an average of 51 in five matches. Parthiv Patel who is the part of the Test team in Sri Lanka, has also been picked up for the ODI series in Sri Lanka, but failed to find a place in the Champions Trophy.

Team for Sri Lanka ODIs – Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain), Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, Harbhajan Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Praveen Kumar, Irfan Pathan, RP Singh, Parthiv Patel and Virat Kohli.
