Father of Green Revolution MS Swaminthan opined Odisha as the paradise of bio-diversity while speaking at the Odisha Environment Congress 2013 at Bhubaneswar on December 23.
Swaminathan was quite hopeful of the Odisha scenario and praised the rich bio-diversity that is available in state particularly in the tribal district of Koraput where a many variety of rice and mango groves are in plenty. “It’s a global agro-biodiversity heritage site,” coined Swaminathan while speaking about the rich bio-diversity and natural resources available in the state.
He advocated for the maintenance of specific areas for sustainable diversities like curative, culinary and others which forms the eco-system diversity. “I expect blue print in this congress for sustainable agriculture and environment,” hoped Swaminathan while talking on an Ever-Green Revolution.
“India is the only country that makes legal commitment for food with the Right to Food Act,” he said adding that agriculture becomes very important in such a scenario. “There is the need of applied ecology in agriculture. If economics of farming goes wrong then nothing will go right,” stated Swaminathan while expecting the expansion of production but it should be a sustainable one without harming the ecology.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was also In favour of sustainable agriculture growth with environmental protection measures. “Scientists task is to help farmers with indigenous practices and to build their capacity. I hope the congress would meet the required policy level changes,” observed Patnaik while inaugurating the 4th Odisha Environment Congress.
