Odisha Rights Commission serves notice to Kandhamal DM, SSP on custodial death
The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) of Odisha has issued show cause notices to the District Collector and Superintendent of Police of Kandhamal district to file reply within four weeks from the date of passing the Order on a custodial death that took place at Kandhamal Police Station.

On December 22, 2013 the police from G Udayagiri of Kandhamal district took Pratap Pradhan, aged about 26 years, in custody suspecting him as a Maoist leader. According to police informers Pratap and three others were allegedly extracting money in the name of Maoists from the running vehicles at Kalinga Ghati under G Udayagiri police station.

Later the police took Pratap into their custody at Phulbani and while interrogation he died according to the local public. However, the same was denied by the police and they claimed that Pratap was shifted to the District Head Quarter Hospital, Phulbani where he was declared death.

The mother of the deceased alleged that her son died due to the police torture when he was under their custody. A senior ournalist Rabi Das and human rights activist Biswapriya Kanungo who is also an advocate, filed a case before the Odisha State Human Rights Commission on 28th of December 2013.

Chairman of SHRC of Odisha Justice B K Mishra while taking cognizance of the complain has now served notices to both the Superintendent of Police and the District Collector of Kandhamal.
