Should Officers, accused of misbehavior be stripped of their medals?
DGP Rathore sentenced 6 months jail along with Rs.1000 fine, this news brought tears in the eyes of many, tears of happiness and relief. Rathore who molested 14 year old Ruchika 19 years ago was finally punished for his sinful act. It was a moment of victory for Aradhana, Ruchika's friend and her parents who have been fighting for her since so long. Rathore molested Ruchika and when she along with her family filed complaint against him he started troubling her family too. He got her out of the tennis club, forced the school to expel her from her school, got her brother's name in theft cases, tortured him and got him beaten by the drunken police officials. The 14 year teen could not take all this and committed suicide on 28th Dec 1993, three years after she was molested.Rathore being in the police used his power for his benefit and against the Girhotra's. He misused his connections and tortured them. Aradhna Parkash, Ruchika's friend dint stop after all this and kept fighting for her friend. Ruchika became a house hold name and media stepping into it made it more recognizable. There were protests, hoardings, newspaper articles etc that brought the decision of taking away Rathore's medals which were given to him in Aug 1985 for his meritorious service in police department. This is a wise decision which will become an example for others too. People in authority or power should understand that just because they have power they cannot misuse it and take people for granted. They just cannot go on doing things like this and escape. It is rightly said that, "authority challenges authority", in this case the Central Government by taking away the medals from Rathore has challenged him and sent a loud and clear message to others that they cannot be unfair and escape.
There have been cases in he past that show IAS and IPS officers being doing such things. K P S Gill was convicted for pinching the bottom of senior IAS officer Rupan Deol Bajaj in 1998 but got away by paying a fine. The former Punjab DGP, has a Padma Shri too. Another name is IPS officer R K Sharma -- convicted in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case. This decision marks beginning of reform mechanism in the country. And this should not stop at all. These officers should be stripped of their medals and all other awards should be taken away and also their pensions should be stopped. These are the people who are appointed for looking after the people and taking caring that no one breaks the law. Now its time to teach them a lesson that if they themselves break he law hey have to pay a higher price for it. the decision would send a message loud and clear that guilty would not go scot free
