The poor power supply led to full-fledged 'riots' across Haryana. The power utilities' officials were held hostage and locked-up at Karnal, Kaithal, Yamunanagar, Sirsa, Kurukshetra, Hisar, Rohtak and other places.
The delayed monsoon and ongoing paddy sowing has worsened the power position in Haryana and daily power shortage is touching 400 lac units.
The forced closure of four thermal units coupled with tripping of two units, the states own generation is around 1776 MW. The power supplied in state is 1268 lac units against restricted demand of 1641 lac units. The power utilities overdrew 140 lac units.
Both units of 600 MW Yamuna Nagar thermal are on forced outage along with one 600 MW unit at Khedar due to turbine related problems. A senior HPGCL official said on conditions of anonymity that this is the result of poor quality Chinese equipment installed at thermal plants. Both units of Yamuna Nagar are not expected to be made operative in this paddy season.
According to sources, the turbine of Khedar unit has been repaired locally by Chinese engineers and is expected tostart working soon. HPGCL engineers were demanding replacement of damaged turbine blades.
One 660 MW unit at Jhajjar is non- operative due to coal shortage. The other unit at Jhajjar is running around 390 MW. Two units of Panipat thermal with capacity of 327 MW are under breakdown due to technical faults.
All categories of consumers except VIP persons are facing long scheduled and unscheduled power cuts due to power shortage.
