According to the study, as reported by zeenews.com, a senior researcher Hirofumi Tanaka, said that people do a number of different exercises such as walking and cycling but swimming might just be the answer for them. According to research 43 older men and women, 60 years of age, who started swimming a few times a week actually saw the number of their blood pressure drop. Over 12 weeks they got into the pool for three or four times a week extending their time up to 45 minutes into the pool. The average drop that a swimmer who started at 131 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) saw was of 122 mm Hg.
Swimming is voted as better than most exercise for the elderly due to the fact that it is easy on the joints. Inspite of many benefits of swimming a lot of people in India do not swim. There is no proper research into the health benefits of swimming as well.
Though at the same time it must be said that the study was small in scale, and researchers are not sure about the consistency of the relationship between swimming as an exercise and lowering of blood pressure. The research maintained that elders who have been advised for moderate exercise can choose swimming over other exercises as in the long run it is sure to benefit an individual.
