JAMMU AND KASHMIR Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah Saturday said that the political system in India has recognized and allowed the celebration of different identities, symbols and marks. “We have been able to weave the fabric of a composite Indian culture and society”, he said adding that the national identity of the country reflects different shades and colours.
Omar was addressing the two day 35th All India Sociological Conference on the theme ‘Identity, Development and National Building’ at Convocation Hall in Kashmir University. Omar said that identity and national building has been the perennial theme of post colonial independent states of the world. “During the colonial rule right of assertion of identity along with other rights of people were suppressed and subjugated. The efforts of the colonial masters were to confront the identities against each other instead of providing them the opportunities of maintaining a harmonious level. In most of the cases, the colonizers had little comprehension of the dynamics of identities”, he maintained and added that in the post independence phase of India, identities were provided enough opportunities through democratic processes and institutions, to assert and satisfy their urges. Stating that identity assertions and mobilization in most of the cases has helped the elites belonging to a particular identity group to reap the political and economic benefits and majority remained as have-nots. “Therefore, the need of the hour is to unite people towards the path of development, economic progress and national building”, he asserted. The Chief Minister said that State of Jammu and Kashmir symbolizes multi culturalism and ‘we provide an illustration of amity and harmony’. He said the State comprises of three different geographical regions of Ladakh, Kashmir and Jammu representing different cultures, religions and languages.
