In Jaipur, the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) has started an on-line study centre for a certificate course on learning disabilities. The certificate course is of three months and will work as a foundation course for parents and teachers, reports Rajasthan Patrika.
The course called the 'Foundation Course on Learning of Children with Learning Disabilities' (FCLCLA) is a short term on-line course that can be useful to promote inclusive education. Also, the course will equip parents, pre-primary teachers, primary teachers, educators and school counselors to carry out specific interventions to integrate children with learning disabilities with the mainstream education.
Learning disability (LA) refers to significant learning problems in an academic area like reading, writing and calculations. Scientifically, LA describes a group of disorders characterized by inadequate development of specific academic, language, and speech skills. Technically speaking, various types of learning disabilities include reading disability or dyslexia, mathematics disability or dyscalculia and writing disability or dysgraphia.
If not attended to at an early age, both at home and schools, children with learning disabilities can face unique challenges that often get pervasive throughout their lifespan. Early intervention at times with new technologies can help children learn strategies and acquire skills that will foster recovery and future success in academics. Some interventions can be quite simplistic which the parents and school teachers can use easily if they are sensitive toward children.
Such courses are can be helpful to the primary schools to design and execute specific interventions with parents to improve the learning for students with learning disabilities. It has been observed that most reading difficulties result due to the lack of phonemic awareness of a language - the ability to break up words into their component sounds, and difficulty with matching letter combinations to specific sounds.
My experience in a primary education project informs that the schools teaching language through alphabet method not only do a disservice to children with reading difficulties, but also become the potent centers of spreading bad reading habits among normal children. The courses of language learning with stress on words, sight vocabulary and phonetics are able to enhance the reading ability of students.
