On Parliament attack anniversary eve, are we any safer?
The investigations in India have a tendency to continue for years without resulting into any relevant result. If they do come out, the recommendations are just ignored. This with the lack of attention to enforcement, how can we expect it to work?
WHETHER WE are safer or not is not limited to a terrorist threat. On a wider dimension, security involves all other threats that affect our life and property and above all our lifestyle, our values. When we are afraid to even walk on the road without fear, when we fear the food we eat... we are not safe at all. With greater security checks and tighter regulations, there have been some effort to create an atmosphere of 'peace' but we have not focused till now on dismantling the source from where threat originates. We have still not learnt to respect lives.

Then there is the issue of catching the culprits and punishing them. Have we punished Azmal Kasab till now? Have we hanged Afzal till now, a full eight years after parliament attack? Have we given due compensation to all the deceased persons' families? Forget the many people killed, the government of India has still not paid ex-gratia to its own police officers!

The investigations in this country have a tendency to continue for years without resulting into any relevant result. If they do come out, the recommendations are just ignored. There is no doubt, that the Mumbai attack was a failure of our security establishment apart from many other factors. But the police staffs and the security personnel, who will see that even after death, government is not paying necessary attention… do we expect them to keep working honestly?

Man can work without salary but not without respect. Until we don't respect each and every life, until we do not ensure that the weakest and the poorest feel benefited, we will be only be as unsafe as before.
