The number of Indians living in slums was around 42.6 million in 2001 constituting 23.1 per cent population of the 640 towns and cities.

The people living in these slums are devoid of basic amenities like sanitation, health care and potable water and It was to alleviate the sufferings of the people living in the slums that the government launched Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in 2005.

The Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP) programme under JNNURM addresses housing and civic amenities in 65 Mission cities. Similar problems of Non-Mission cities are addressed through the scheme of Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP). The Mission period is 2005-2012.
