One glassy, two glassy, three glassy, flat...
In this context it would be wise to give some facts: Kerala boasts in its per capita consumption of liquor at 8.3 liters, followed by Punjab.
SOME PEOPLE feel that alcohol is a substance that can be used to escape reality and live in a world where there are no dilemmas or problems that must be solved. Mostly depressed individuals usually indulge themselves with alcohol to escape from their stressful life. Regulars often observe one-man party at their bar-at-homes or small get togethers involving 2–3 persons in their rooms. Moreover, affluent singles also seem to enjoy in their car-O-bars in their parents’ cars where they treat their friends or self with some lavish, costly, branded wines. Media also plays a vital role in associating liquor with glamour and fashion with high social status. This is interpreted in a wrong way by youths without properly weighing the consequences of drinking.

ALCOHOL has an Arabic origin “al-kuhl” meaning “a powder for painting the eyes.” Afterwards, the word was used in other compounds that contain alcoholic spirits.

Despite of being classified as a food, alcohol is not at all an energy drink. Rather they are slow poisons. The average drink has about the same calorie as in a big potato, but unlike a potato or any other food, alcohol has no nutritional value.

Before independence, Gandhi ji had himself issued several strong statements against the sale and consumption of alcohol. But alcohol is a significant contributor to government revenues in many states. In most states this accounts for over 10% of total state tax revenues, whereas in Punjab this accounts for over one-third.

Alcohol is not digested like other foods. Instead of being converted and transported to cells and tissues, nearly 20% of the alcohol gets absorbed to the blood through the stomach walls. Moreover, 80% of alcohol gets absorbed to the bloodstream through the small intestine.

Alcohol reaches at the brain, liver, heart, pancreas, lungs, kidneys, and every other organ and tissue system minutes after it is drunk as it passes into the blood stream. If the drink has a significant strength or high alcohol concentration, then there will be high absorption rates, with higher concentrations of alcohol in blood.

It’s been read elsewhere that moderate alcohol consumption facilitates insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of diabetes, avoid some sort of cancer, and prevent bone loss.

Alcohol is not a stimulant, yet it has been associated with tags like “he/she/I was stimulated by alcohol, etc.” which is not true. An alcohol-intoxicated person exhibits slurred speech, lose muscle tone, loss of coordination between different sensory organs, and often has a staggering "drunken" gait, and pupils may become constricted. At intoxicating doses, alcohol can decrease heart rate, lower blood pressure and respiration rate, and result in decreased reflex and slower reaction times. Whether the alcohol is abused or just used in moderation, many people are drawn to the several aspects it has to offer.

Alcohol is a drug that is classified as a central nervous system depressant. There are three forms of alcohol, beer, wine and distilled spirits. It should be noted that beers contain 3–8% alcohol, wines contain 8–12% alcohol, and distilled beverages (spirits) such as vodka, whiskey, gin, etc. contain 40–50% of alcohol.

Sure enough alcohol makes one overlook his/her problems, but the consequences of drinking in excess in the process outweigh the benefits. Other drugs rise and fall in popularity from generation to generation, but alcohol never really goes out of fashion.

Out of all the interviewees, Srigida—an MNC executive, giving his befitting response—opines that everybody should keep in mind the following 3 Ds’ while consuming alcohol:
? Diet
? Dilution
? Duration

In this context it would be wise to give some facts: Kerala boasts in its per capita consumption of liquor at 8.3 liters, followed by Punjab at 7.9 liters. It’s a bitter truth that the age at which youngsters begin to consume liquor has come down in Kerala. In 1986 the age was 19, by 1990 it had dropped to 17, and by 1994 the age was 14.

Post-independence, the open availability of liquor in India has witnessed many teens to take up the habit of drinking after experimenting alcohol as a casual habit in group outings or get togethers. The social calendars of most teens are full of alcohol these days. The carbon dioxide in champagne and carbonated mixers such as Coke, Pepsi, and soda water rushes through the stomach and intestinal walls into the blood stream, carrying alcohol with it and creating a rapid rise in blood alcohol content. It should be noted that female drinkers reach higher blood alcohol levels faster because of less water and more fat in their bodies.
