One sugary soft-drink a day can increase the risk of Diabetes by 22 percent
There are already many health problems associated with soft-drinks and now diabetes has also been added to the list of health problems, as a new study suggests that drinking one 12-ounce-sugary soft drink a day can increase the risk of getting type-2 diabetes by 22 percent when compared to those who does not consume any kind of sugary drinks.

The research was conducted by Dr Dora Romaguera, Dr Petra Wark and Dr Teresa Norat, Imperial College London, UK, and colleagues, and was published in Diabetologia. The study was basically conducted to determine the association between sugary soft-drinks, drinking juices and artificially sweetened soft-drinks and type-2 diabetes.

When this citizen journalist brought up the connection of soft drink and type 2 Diabetes with Dr. IPS Kochar, Senior Consultant & HOD Paediatric & Adolescent Endocrinologist, Apollo Hospital, Sarita Vihar, he said, “Yes, sugary soft-drinks can increase the level of sugar in your body.” The soft drinks contain high amount of sucrose and glucose and these sugar substances do not get metabolized in the body due to the sedentary lifestyle and is converted into 'Gluconate' which then converts into fatty acid and gets deposited, says Mr. Kochar.

The researchers also observed a statistically significant increase in type 2 diabetes incidence related to artificially sweetened soft drink consumption but the association disappeared after taking into account the BMI of participants. It indicates that the association was not causal but driven by the weight of participants.

The pure fruit juice and nectar consumption was not significantly associated with diabetes incidence, however it was not possible using the data available to study separately the effect of 100% pure juices from those with added sugars, reported Food Product Design.

But Dr. SS Rastogi, Senior Consultant & HOD Endocrinologist, at Shanti Mukand Hospital, Vikas Marg does not agree with this and says that, “If you have a sugary soft-drink once in a while, it has a very slight change on your blood sugar levels. And to compensate it you can decrease somewhere else.
