Op-Ed: A platform for the literati to express opinion
An op-ed, abbreviated from opposite the editorial page (though often mistaken from opinion-editorial), is a newspaper article that expresses the opinion of a named writer who is usually unaffiliated with the newspaper's editorial board.
IN PRESENT times, the people especially the literati are very much enlightened towards their rights and the ongoing situation. For every situation and condition they have peculiar notions, which they want to express. Everyone’s mind is flooded with the different ideas and views and each and every individual wants to interpret their ideas in front of others that what he or she think about that ongoing situation.

Arising the plethora of viewpoints on a topic is essential to be informed for thoughtful decision making. But most of the time they lack the platform to publish their views. Because, they are not aware about the correct link or niche, that where they should have to pitch to publish their piece of work.

For this they search a platform to express their emerging notions. Through various ways individual disseminate their talks to the masses in which blogs, posts, comment and citizen log are some of the spaces which provide platform to a common man to express their own notion about the occurrences.

Among many others, one of the conspicuous concepts which provides the stage to hoi-polloi is ‘Op-Ed’.

What is an “Op-Ed”?

An op-ed, abbreviated from opposite the editorial page (though often mistaken from opinion-editorial), is a newspaper article that expresses the opinion of a named writer, who is usually not affiliated with the newspaper’s editorial board. These are different from editorials, which are usually unsigned and written by editorial board members; although the standard editorial pages have been printed by newspapers for many centuries.

According to Wiki encyclopedia source, the first modern op-ed page was created in 1921, by Herbert Bayard Swope of The New York Evening World. Editorial may also be in the form of editorial cartoon.

Typically, a newspaper editorial board evaluates which issues are important for their readership to know newspaper’s opinion often published in newspapers, and more recently in online publications.

Purposes of op-eds

In a general prospect, op-eds are offered to educate members of the public about an issue, beyond what the media outlet may have been covering independently.

Op-eds are about exposure, awareness, and image-building. Exposure comes by the simple act of having someone’s name and thoughts shared publicly through the media. Op-eds help as an image-building tool as well, by helping to brand the author of the piece as an authority source on the particular issue at hand.

How to get an op-ed published

An op-ed is a guest opinion column found in the editorial section of your newspaper. As a member of the community, you can use it as a tool to get your message out in the local media.
One of the most important factors in whether an op-ed piece will be published is whether or not its author has the appropriate experience or credentials in the subject matter to make them appear as an expert. So only write op-eds relating to areas that can be covered with authority.
When possible, personalise your piece with an experience or anecdote.

Appeal to the average reader. Don’t use technical language or jargon. Choose a current issue which appeals to a broad range of audience.

Avoid explaining all sides of the issue. Focus on one view and include an opening and closing paragraph that clearly states your point what you would like to pretend.

While submitting op-eds for consideration caveat that exclusivity is almost always required by national newspapers and preferred by many local newspapers -- although local papers do allow multiple submissions outside their general circulation area. It is better option that pursuit individual newspaper guidelines on this issue.

Editors at large newspapers and magazines receive hundreds of submissions each week and must weigh several factors when choosing which to publish. The criteria include the article's quality, timeliness, freshness of viewpoint and the number of articles already published on the topic. Priority is often given to a publication's regular columnists.

At last I would like to cease this sharing with an optimistic statement that, if your op-ed is rejected at one publication, don’t be discouraged. You may have success at another publication or with another subject.
