Opportunists exploit the Anna Hazare wave to the full 28 December, 2011
Businessmen know that opportunity knocks at the door once and are therefore busy in selling their merchandise at Anna's fast protest in Mumbai.
THE MMRDA grounds in Mumbai are flooded with Anna merchandise like the Gandhi topi, vests, badges, photographs and, side by side vendors of fast foods who are trying to make hay while the sun shines.
Anna Hazare might love to fast, but not the crowds – they must get their dose of samosas or Vadas or chatpata snacks and, of course, tea. Bottled drinking water also sells irrespective of the time of the day – to quench thirst.
The lectures on the dais can go on and on – eating anyways helps relieve the boredom and monotony.
Any agitation must necessarily have a leader (unless it is one like the Occupy Wall Street in New York!) and, in order to encourage participation, and join the procession and raise slogans, and inculcate a sense of belonging to those who want to feel wanted, it has become customary to issue them gifts.
These could be in the form of photos of leaders who are associated with the agitation, or mementos like scarves, umbrellas, sun caps, and flags. Each of the ‘gifts’ would be exhibiting the slogans which would help to spread the message.
And – for those who are not lucky to be in line for freebies, the local vendor is there – one can always buy a cap or a vest that has the slogans embellished on them.
