Opposition parties stage rail roko across Tamil Nadu; demand constitution of Cauvery Management Board
Urging the Centre to immediately constitute the cauvery board, various political parties of Tamil Nadu have begun a state-wide 48-hour rail blockade demonstration.

Parties, including DMK, Congress, PWA, TMC, Dravidar Kazhagam, traders and various other Tamil outfits have decided to take part in the protests.

"The protest that was called by the farmer's organisations against the Centre has been called to condemn the Centre's decision to oppose the setting up of Cauvery Management Board in the Supreme Court. Protesters have said that the Centre has betrayed the interests of Tamil Nadu.

As per reports, the farmers have planned to stage the protest between Bhoodhalur and Thiruvidaimaruthur sections and between Thanjavur railway junction and Koilvenni section.

Senior members of the political parties have also decided to take part in the protests. While Tamil Manila Congress leader GK Vasan will be participating in the second day of the protest in Thanjavur, CPI state secretary R Mutharasan would participate in the protests on both days. Leader of opposition in the Assembly and DMK Treasurer, MK Stalin was among those who participated in the protests. He led a procession at Perambur in Chennai.

A number of political workers belonging to DMK, the Left parties and MDMK have been detained for staging a rail blockade demonstration and attempting to disrupt railway services.

To make the rail roko demonstrations more effective, protests have been called in various railway stations including Fort, Srirangam, Thiruverumbur, Poongudi and Uthamakoil in Trichy district during the first day of the stir. On the second day, rail roko will be held in Trichy town, Palakkarai, Pettaivaithalai and Manapparai railway stations.

Incidentally, the high level central technical team formed by the Supreme Court to assess the realities in Cauvery basin areas in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu will also submit its findings and report to the Supreme Court today. The team is being led by central water commission chairman GS Jha.
