Oracle sues Google over Java use in Android OS
The company stated that Google 'knowingly, directly and repeatedly infringed Oracle's Java-related intellectual property' in developing its market grabbing smartphone OS Android.
ORACLE CORP sued Google Inc for allegedly infringing several patents and copyrights in development of its hugely hit mobile OS Android.

Oracle claimed in the suit that Google has violated its intellectual property rights and caused severe damage to company.

The company stated that Google "knowingly, directly and repeatedly infringed Oracle's Java-related intellectual property" in developing its market grabbing smartphone OS Android.

Oracle spokeswoman Karen Tillman said in a statement that the lawsuit seeks “appropriate remedies."

Oracle acquired Java after it purchased Sun Microsystems for $5.6 billion earlier this year. Analysts believe that this lawsuit is an indication that Oracle would want more licensing control over Java which has become an integral part of internet-based products, mobile platforms and games etc.

Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison said that Java software was a huge asset for the company which is used in a variety of electronic devices and gadgets from PCs to DVD players.

While Oracle has been quite vocal about the lawsuit, a Google spokesman said that the company couldn’t comment on the issue as they had still not gone through the documents and they have not reviewed it yet.

It is unknown how Google takes it and how will they defend themselves as many analysts believe that Google’s Android OS does use portions of Java technology in its software development kit.

According to Eric Schmidt, Google Chief Executive, as many as 200,000 Android based devices are sold each day which includes smartphones.
