Oral health important for overall health: J&K Guv
Referring to the tremendous advances made in the realm of dental sciences, the Governor said that most sophisticated implants, artificial teeth and dentures are now available. He, however, stressed the need for devising appropriate approaches.
JAMMU AND KASHMIR Governor, N. N. Vohra, inaugurated the three-day 10th J&K State and Inter-State Dental Conference at SKICC. A large number of delegates from within and outside the State are participating in this Conference, which has been organized under the aegis of the Indian Dental Association.

In his inaugural address, as the Chief Guest, the Governor emphasized the need for visualizing, planning and effectively implementing healthcare services to the people, which include oral healthcare facilities, across the State, especially in the rural areas.


Referring to the initiatives taken by the late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah for promotion of rural healthcare system, the Governor said that credit goes to him for visualizing a scheme like Rehbar-i-Sehat, adding that he had a very pragmatic approach regarding the delivery of rural health programmes. He said that J&K is well known as a health conscious State.


Referring to the tremendous headway made in the realm of dental sciences, the Governor said that most sophisticated implants, artificial teeth and dentures are now available. He, however, stressed the need for devising appropriate approaches so that all the dental care equipment and materials are produced indigenously and are available at affordable prices.


The Governor also observed that oral health is a very important element of the overall health of an individual, adding that whatever health policy is adopted by the State, oral health would need to be accorded high priority. He said that many ailments are due to dental problems which do not get timely detected and properly treated. He said it is gratifying that oral health has been given due place in the National Health Policy.


The Minister for Medical Education, R. S. Chib, said that the Indian Dental Association is playing a vital role in promoting the cause of dental sciences and those associated with its J&K Chapter are also contributing significantly in this direction. He thanked the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh and the UPA Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi for taking keen interest in the rapid development of J&K and said that with liberal central assistance the healthcare sector in the State is being modernized and expanded to meet the requirements of people. He said that both the Medical Colleges of Srinagar and Jammu are being modernized with the central funding.


The Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi, said that the Conference is being held to exchange ideas and share experiences as well as review the dental health strategies by the participants. He said that now a galaxy of dental surgeons is available in the State but still greater effort is required to create awareness among the masses about dental heath.
