Telecom operator Orange has launched its own application shop with a list of 5000 applications on Wednesday. The move shows the trend in telecom operators to cash in on Mobile Internet.

THE TELECOM operator Orange has added its name to the list of telecom operators who have their own application shop. Similar to close competitors like O2 Litmus and T-Mobile, the Orange application shop opened on Wednesday, December 9, with a long list of 5000 apllications, ringtones, games and wallpapers. It would also offer a combined service of other Orange products like Orange TV, Orange Games and Orange Maps.

Yves Tyrode, Orange Executive Vice President said,"We are giving customers a tailor-made shop window on the mobile that makes it easier to discover, download, use and manage content. Whether it’s a Smartphone user, or someone using a simpler device, we know the demand for content is there – it’s just about getting that experience right."

After this application shop, by January 2010 all major handets providers in UK like Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG, HTC and Motorola will have a pre-loaded Application shop on Orange. The application shop service by Orange would also cover other European countries like Spain, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, Slovakia, Belgium, Austria, Moldova and Portugal.

The move shows the rising trend among telecom and handset providers, to cash in on Mobile Internet, as more and more people choose to access the internet through their phones. "Mobile apps are redefining how people experience the internet on mobile phones," said Christophe Francois, head of Orange's Technocentre in an interview recently.
