Orchids from Thailand are the most sought after in many countries including India
The exotic flowers of Thailand, orchids, have a huge demand worldwide and there are many orchid breeding and supplying companies in Bangkok that export orchid flowers to as many as 20 odd countries of the East and the West.

One might be surprised to learn that India is one of the main importers of Thai orchids among the Eastern countries and these flowers are used in social functions such as wedding parties and birthday celebrations for decoration and bouquet presentations. These flowers are favourites among event managers and florists for decorations on any special occasion because they are long-lasting.

However, in Bangkok, you find the orchid plants on trees, pots, gardens, parks, offices and shops as a unique addition. You will find flower stems dipped in water in vases on tables in all kinds of living, public and work places. The white, red and pink orchid flowers are more popular than the other varieties since they come in relatively larger sizes. These flowers are highly evolved among the plant kingdom and have leathery leaves and corky roots.

In India, orchids are found in Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and other Northeastern states. However, breeding and cultivation of orchids has not been taken up in India or made commercially viable. During my stay in Thailand, I was reminded of my encounter with an orchid flower show in Sikkim.
