Orissa government orders probe into farmers suicide
Orissa Agriculture Minister has instructed the RDC, to file in a day or two a report on the alleged farmers' suicides after crop loss. Congress party had demanded a probe by the National Human Rights Commission into the farmers' suicides.
UNDER PRESSURE from opposition parties Congress and BJP, the BJD led Orissa government on Tuesday (october 13), ordered a probe into reports of farmers’ suicides in the state. Orissa Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout has instructed the revenue divisional commissioner (RDC), northern range, to file in a day or two a report on the alleged farmers’ suicides after crop loss.

“We have instructed the RDC to inquire into the matter. Since two such incidents have happened - one in Jharsuguda and the other in Sambalpur - we have instructed the RDC to inquire into the matter and send us a report in a day or two,” Rout said.

On Monday, the opposition Congress party demanded a probe by the National Human Rights Commission into the farmers’ suicides.

Meanwhile, two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Western Orissa were arrested on Tuesday, for allegedly blackening the face of the deputy director of the state agriculture department, DC Pai, Monday for submitting a false report on farmers’ suicides to the state government.

It is to be mentioned that general public and BJP workers were angry over the farmers' suicide in Jharsuguda and Sambalpur of Western Orissa region, manhandled and thrashed Sambalpur deputy director of agriculture D C Pal here on Monday.

Sources said, the government had asked the deputy director to submit a report on farmers' suicides. The officer without visiting the spots submitted the reports citing "family dispute" as the reason for suicide.

"His report stated that the death of farmers has no relation with crop loss or agriculture loan. When everyone knows that destruction of paddy is due to poor rainfall and locusts attack, the officer misled the government by submitting a false report. So we taught him a lesson," a BJP worker said.

A team of high-level BJP leaders led by state president Suresh Pujari visited Khapsadea village in Sambalpur district on Monday where a farmer had committed suicide on October 7.
