A research team, constituted of MLAs and civic body officials in Orissa have left for Mumbai, in order to discern how to deal with slum development and rehabilitation of slum dwellers in Orissa. The team would also go to Pune and Ahmedabad.
A TWENTY member team of which includes Berhampur Mayor; Deputy mayors of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar and some corporators left for Mumbai on Sunday (Sept 14), to review slum development projects there. Headed by Bhubaneswar MLA Bijaya Kumar Mohanty, the team would also review the measures and projects undertaken at neighbouring cities of Pune and Ahemedabad.
Orissa government is contemplating a face-lift of the existing slums in the state so as to work on development projects for whom, these prove to obstacles. The team has been organised to carry out research process, even looking into rehabilitation of slum dwellers as carried out by heir concerned municipal corporations, so that the government can undertake any suitable action.
Before leaving, they met with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and sought his advice in this regard. The Chief Minister has asked them to carefully review and chart out an ideal slum development project at the metros.
Housing and urban development minister Badri Narayan Patra said, "Like all urban centres, the fast growing number of slums has been a problem for cities like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Berhampur. So we have decided to learn and replicate the best practices initiated in public-private-partnership mode in rehabilitation, housing and other services in slums."
Mohanty, the leader of the delegation said, "There is no dearth of funds, but we must plan something that will be sustainable and will match to the growth of the cities."
The team is expected to return to Orissa on September 20.
