TO EASE commoners from the burden of traffic congestion often created by heavy load of mineral-carrying trucks on roads, Chief Secretary of Orissa Bijay Kumar Patnak has directed the concerned departments to make a proper study of transport strength. At a high level meeting, it was decided that the minerals meant for export will be transported to Paradip port through railways and the transportation through roads will be discouraged. Steps will be taken to limit the number of trucks plying on the National Highway. The ideal number of trucks at a given point of time will be kept limited to 2000.
A sub-committee comprising of Mining, Railways and Transport authorities has been constituted to make a study of transport strength of roads and movement of vehicles at different points. It will also make a study of daily requirement of coal consuming plants operating in the state, and will suggest possibilities of tagging up of power plants with specific mines and sidings.
The committee will prepare a draft transportation plan. Chief Secretary has suggested that while making the study, the committee should think of optimal utilization of different modes of transportation. The transport plan will have a direct bearing upon the extraction of minerals and issue of permits to the transporters.
