Over 30 shops gutted in fire at Madurai's Meenakshi Temple
According to media reports, fire broke out in Tamil Nadu's famous temple at Madurai called Meenakshi Amman temple.

It is being said that more than 30 shops in the temple complex were gutted. The fire tenders have been pressed into service to control the fire.

It is being speculated that fire broke out due to short circuit. Fortunately, no one was killed in the incident and district administration is overseeing the operation to control fire.

Initial reports indicate the fire started from a toy shop near the temple mandpam and soon spread to another dozen shops. The pigeons in the temple and shopping area flew helter-skelter after the fire.

Meenakshi Temple is a historic Hindu temple located on the banks of the Vaigai River in the temple city of Madurai that is dedicated to a form of Parvati. In the olden times, the temple was plundered many times and present structure was rebuilt after the 14th century CE.

The currently restored temple complex has 14 gopurams or gateway towers and its sculpted pillared halls such as Ayirakkal has 1,000 pillars. The sanctums of Goddess Meenakshi and God Sundaresvara are gilded with gold.

Another special thing about the temple is that the Meenakshi temple hosts a festival in each month of the Tamil calendar.
