Over 400 producers helped in the making of my movie: Onir
The movie 'I, AM', directed by Onir has been showcased at various international film festivals. In a one-to-one chat, Onir opens up with Kriti Batra about the movie, the idea of raising money through contributory funding, and star cast.
FILM DIRECTOR Onir is known for meaningful cinema and making films on offbeat issues. Here he talks about movie making and how he managed to raise money for his upcoming movie 'I, AM' using social networking sites.

How do you like being addressed as the master of offbeat cinema?

Well, I really don’t know if I am the master of offbeat cinema. However, I just make movies that I believe in. I have my own identity and style as a director and my movies reflect the same.

Is it true that you have raised funds for your next release 'I, Am' with the help of a popular social networking website?

Yes! It is true. Around 400 people have invested not only their hard-earned money but also were a part of the production crew. You can also find a partial list of the contributors on the movie website.

You have taken a path, which no one else has ever treaded. You raised funds with help of a social networking website, where as the Bollywood fraternity usually uses this platform to connect with their audience. What brought about this idea?

We started out by planning four different movies, but finding producers and financiers for movies based on social issues was an arduous task. So, we came up with this idea of clubbing all the four plots into a single venture and putting it up on social networking websites. Raising funds using a social networking website was an experiment, and we were sure that there was nothing to lose if it didn’t work for us. Today, I am glad we took that step.

Was the budget a deciding factor for the star cast of the movie?

Budget was never a problem, however, mainstream actors are not willing to experiment with offbeat movies. With that being said Sanjay Suri, Anurag Kashyap and others fit the bill perfectly, and have portrayed their respective characters with utmost conviction. Also, they are well-known for their unforgettable performances in meaningful cinema.

How confident are you about the film's success at the box office?

I believe with around 400 people investing their money and believing in the movie, my confidence level for sure is soaring high.

What is the message that you want to convey by this movie?

Well, the movie is divided into four plots/stories and each has its own message, which is very well-conveyed. Also, I personally think it is high time we wake up from our slumber and do something about these social issues.
