Overall development of society my first priority: Says Suresh Gaur, Independent candidate, Gurgaon
Independent candidates have a harder battle to win in any elections. Not being affiliated to a party means that they have to campaign for their own cause, let people know the works that they intend to do for them and the rest. Gurgaon's Assembly election, which is just two months away has surfaced many such independent candidates. Suresh Gaur, who has spent a lot of his years working for the labours of Gurgaon is contesting as an independent candidate for the Assembly elections. Knowing about red-tapism, corruption and union politics in the system, he wants to change things in the industrial sector of the city and fast.

Talking to him, Merinews tried to understand what are his goals and what he intends to do for the city and its people, once he wins in Gurgaon.

Question (Q): From what kind of problems people are suffering in this constituency?

Suresh Gaur (SG): Gurgaon is considered to be a hub of industries across the NCR region. Long time stability for these industries is attributed to those workers, who are working in these organizations for many years. However around 3 lakh workers, working in Gurgaon do not even have a roof over their heads. The people living in Sheetla Colony, Ashok Vihar, Shakti Colony, Surat Nagar, Rajiv Colony, and Devilal Colony in Gurgaon are suffering a lot due to acute shortage of drinking water, electricity and poor sewage system. Some of these colonies are still unapproved. Following corruption, the people have to give bribe for getting even ration cards.

Q: What qualities must a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) possess?

SG: As the representative of the people, an MLA must be conscious of the problems with each class in the society. Overall development of the society is my first priority. Integrity should be shown in his working. He should make all policies under public transparency so that people can also support in implementing these policies. However, ground realities are very different from theories and nothing happens like this.

Q: What is your perception about the politics in Haryana?

SG: The picture of politics has gone from bad to worst in Haryana. It is known for foul play, which involves a lot of caste politics on a very scale. During the elections, the politicians leave no efforts to woo the voters. They don't desist from dividing the people on the basis of religion for making vote bank. Once they come in majority, they never look back.

Q: Gurgaon is a hub of auto industries. Are there any problems faced by auto industries here? If yes, then how will you address the problems?

SG:Lakhs of people have been working in these industrial organizations for the last many years. Large number of violations are witnessed in these industries on a daily basis. Inflation adds to the plight of these workers. They are given the Rs 5400 as monthly stipend according to Haryana Grade, which is not good enough to make a living in the city.

The Center has approved the 9 per cent Provisional Fund annually to the workers but this is not given as per the government guidelines. No medical treatment facility is available for the employees though ESI is paid by the workers every month from their stipend. Dearness Allowance is not given. Labor working on contractual basis is exploited the most.100 per cent work of the company is got done by them whereas they are subjected to the discrimination of unequal income for equal work.

For women, there is no maternity leaves. Under Company Act ? Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), 2 per cent of the company's turnover should be spent on social welfare but this is also not implemented properly. Apart from this, many PF scams of crores were exposed in these organizations.

Q: Why should people of Gurgaon elect you as their representative in the upcoming assembly elections in Haryana?

SG: I am engaged in social activities since 2005. I am President of Honda Motor Cycle & Scooter India Employees Union, Gurgaon. Especially for the rights of the workers in industrial organizations operating in Gurgaon, I had also sustained the serious injuries due to Lath charge by the police during the Honda Kand. More than 15 First Information Reports (FIRS) were lodged against me for agitating for the rights of the labours. Around 150 workers, who worked in Maruti Suzuki Pvt. Ltd., are still behind bars. We are regularly raising the issue before the administration and the ruling Congress led government in Haryana, but the government is tight lipped and not in the mode of any action. We are feeling helpless without power. That's why I think I must be given a chance to serve the entire Gurgaon as its representative. But Mazdoor Bhaiyon Ke Haq Ke Liye, I will continue my fight till the last drop in my blood.

Q: Who is Suresh Gaur in his real life?

SG: (Laughing), I belong to a poor family. Presently, I am living with my family in Gurgaon. I did my matric from Kherki Dhaula School certified with Bhiwani Board Haryana. I have also done ITI from Gurgaon. My entire day goes in sorting out the problems of social works. In the evening, I manage some time for my family also.
