Pad Man's box office collections on day 1: Akshay Kumar's film takes a head start
Pad Man, Bollywood heartthrob Akshay Kumar's latest film had a fabulous first day at the box office with the film collecting more than Rs 10 crore on its opening day.

This will be the second movie in which Akshay takes up an issue surrounding social stigmas. While the first one, Toilet Ek Prem Katha, was based on open defecation, Pad Man is inspired by the real life character Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social activist from Tamil Nadu, who had taken on the stigma around menstruation and sanitary napkins.

Muruganantham is the man who devised a low-cost method of producing sanitary pads for women after finding out that millions of women were unable to use sanitary napkins owing to high cost.

Muruganantham, a metal worker of a village from Tamil Nadu, after finding out that the women of his community were using dirty rags instead of sanitary napkins since they couldn't afford them, vowed to solve this problem. The movie perfectly depicts how he takes on the patriarchal society; the taboo associated with menstruation and succeeds in developing an extremely cheap sanitary napkin for women.

With Rs 10.26 crore of collections on day one, and highly positive reviews from critics and the face of Akshay Kumar, the movie is set to become another hit. What has added to this is that the release of Aiyaary, which was expected to clash with Pad Man, has now been shifted and is slotted for a release in the next week, giving Pad Man a field day.

Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh has given it thumbs up expecting the weekend to be good for the movie.

"#PadMan has a DECENT start... Fri  10.26 cr... The biz, expectedly, picked up towards evening/night shows... The journey ahead is crucial... Sat + Sun should witness strong growth for a good weekend total... India biz," Taran Adarsh wrote on Twitter.

The 2 hour 20 minute movie has been well received by the audience as well with #PadManChallenge emerging as one of the top trends on social media even before its release.

The film also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte. Directed by R Balki, the film also launches Twinkle Khanna as a producer.
