Paes, Black lose mixed doubles final at US Open
Leander Paes will now have to defeat former teammate Mahesh Bhupati and Mark Knowels from Bahamas in order to get his tenth grand slam victory. This makes the showdown between the estranged former partners even more anticipated and intense.
IT WAS an anti-climatic showdown at Flushing Meadows in which India’s Leander Paes and Zimbabwean Cara Black, the defending champions of the US open in the mixed doubles category, lost their title to Americans Travis Parrott and Carly Gullickson 2-6, 4-6 in New York.

The wild card entrants showed excellent form and control as they took on the defending champions and claimed their first Grand Slam victory. Throughout the match, Paes and Black failed to find their rhythm. Black’s game was broken in the third game and from then on the victory was assured for Parrot and Gullickson. Black proved the weak link of the pair as she failed to take on the easiest of shots with gumption.

In the third set, Black’s game was once again broken and the defending champions conceded victory in a very tame manner. The American duo played excellently to their strengths never leaving leeway for the defending champions to once again reclaim the game. Paes tried to bring back the game to his side again by breaking a match point in the second set. But Parrot’s serve in the next game sealed the victory of the Americans.

Talking about the loss, Paes said ,"When we broke them we felt we have a chance of a comeback. But our opponents were too good”.

After winning the coveted Grand Slam, Gulickson gushed, "I can't even believe it. It's my first time on Arthur Ashe. It was a great experience. I'm super excited and happy right now." The winners apart from the getting the much talked about title have also pocketed a cool 150,000 USD for the win. The runners up received 70,000 USD.

This makes the showdown between the estranged former partners even more anticipated and intense. That would be a game worth talking about. It would be the ultimate battle between former friends, who fought a bitter war once. But this game belonged to the American dream team who took on extreme odds and emerged victorious.
