Pakistan knows no law and order
The NATO supply convoy comprising 60 trucks was attacked, plundered and burnt by bandits just half an hour's drive from Islamabad, capital of Pakistan. This was not the first time that it happened and may not be the last time.
ISLAMABAD IS the capital of Pakistan. In common man's perception, it is the capital of loot, plunder, arson and rape. The total apathy of the law enforcing agencies to establish a semblance of law and order has emboldened the Pakistani Taliban to act against the interests of Pakistan.

Whereas the country has received the American aid to the tune of trillions of dollars and has vowed to protect the American and western interests, it has failed to discharge its primary duty of maintaining the rule of law. The Law just does not exist and order has gone on a furlough.

ATTACK ON NATO CONVOYS

The United States of America has been sending 75 percent supplies to the NATO forces deployed in Afghanistan through Pakistan. On Tuesday, 8June 2010, not far from the national capital Islamabad, a band of bandits professing to be Taliban swooped on the NATO convoy firing indiscriminately and killed seven drivers and guards. Plunder and loot followed. They torched about sixty NATO trucks of the supply convoy and disappeared much before the law enforcing agencies appeared on the scene. In a matter of minutes the trucks were reduced to ashes or burning hulls. The firemen who arrived at the scene when they were not needed, did not have much left behind to extinguish the fire. The arsonists and bandits masquerading as Taliban went home with a tremendous sense of job satisfaction.

The Pakistan authorities, including the Army, have egg smeared on their faces as they have not been true to their salt. They took American money to protect American interests but miserably failed to do so. frankly speaking, the soldiers, the policemen and their officers were not even present on the scene of action, what to say of protecting and defending the NATO supply convoy. If the law enforcing agencies were not aware of an imminent attack on the convoy by the Taliban, it merely shows a total failure of the intelligence outfits. In any case, it has been a failure of the Pakistan government in discharging its duties. In the islamic parlance the omission is termed as being "Namak Haram"- not being true to salt and goes against the grain of Islamic teachings.

BANDITRY AGAIN AND AGAIN

This is not the first time that a NATO convoy has been plundered on the soils of Pakistan and the trucks torched. Not many months ago, as many as 30 HUMVEE vehicles of the US Army were torched in the Mohmand region of the AFPAK border, notorious for lawlessness. It was reported that the Pakistan police had withdrawn from the scene leaving the security of the convoy to a few stick-wielding home guards. It was a case of sheer callousness on the part of the security agencies.
There is a strong suspicion, not without foundation, that some elements in the Pakistan Army and para-military outfits are sympathetic to Taliban. They come to know of the Taliban attacks well in time but fail to take protective action. It is feared that they turn Nelson's eye to such acts and omissions that amount to gross dereliction of duty. Does any punishment follow? Well, there are no rewards for making a correct guess.

CHANGE OF SUPPLY ROUTE

The NATO authorities have been mulling over the problem for quite some time. There is a strong consensus that the supply route be changed. Pakistan may be sidelined and massive military aid to them by America be cut by half. Then Pakistan will know where the shoe pinches.

The Central Asian route will be longer but safer. More money on fuel and wages will be spent but the supplies will be safe. They will be delivered to the NATO forces on time when they are needed. Come to think of the arithmetic of the new route, the US government will be saving money as their goods will not be torched time and again.

Last but not the least, the NATO, read American, forces will save themselves the ignominy of being licked by roadside  bandit groups called the Taliban.
